There was a four-fold object in writing this book:
1) It should be a useful textbook for the student.
2) It should be useful to him in his professional career;
3) It should show the’ methods of designing various irrigation works.
4) It should serve as a source of reference for the teacher. ” From -the response to the earlier editions it can be said that the book has attained the Objectives ii was intended for. It is variously looked upon For diploma, degree and postgraduate classes it is a textbook. It has entered even the Agricultural colleges. For the designer its a treatise and for the practical engineer a reference and a handbook.
5) The subject of irrigation has been dealt with right from the rudimentary principles. The reader is gradually and unconsciously led fr:om simple ideas to advanced theories and complicated design. Modern methods of teaching have been kept in ‘ view. Examples will be found throughout the book explaining design of various structures and application of various formulae. The matter is so arranged and the principal points so brought out that at the time of examination the student, to refresh his ‘ memory, can go through whole of the book within a few hours. Irrigation terms are printed conspicuously. Also the principal points have been presented in italics.
6) _ Many tables have been given. The purpose of some of these is to illustrate the relative values of certain factors, while the rest are meant to facilitate design work. Neither class of the tables have to be committed to heart by the student. He has simply to get an idea of the approximate values and remember certain very common constants.
7) In order that the student may be able to gauge his know-.
